Report on the Eye Camp at Ranau: Under the Avoidable Blindness Campaign
Project of District 3310, the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) organized a
1-day Eye Camp at the Community Hall, Ranau on 3rd of July 2011. The Camp
provided the opportunity for 1100 patients from Ranau District to undergo vision
checking, detailed eye examination, out patient treatment and scheduling for
operation for those requiring surgery. The Department of Ophthalmology Queen
Elizabeth Hospital sent a team of eye doctors, medical assistants, optometrists
and nurses to attend to these patients. Common ailments causing visual
impairment included cataract, glaucoma, pterygium and refractory errors.
The Camp was conducted at the Community Hall, Ranau from 8AM to 4PM.
A team of Rotarians and volunteers were on hand to provide assistance to the
medical team. The Club donated the spectacles for the elderly and the medicines
required for conducting the Camp. RCKK has organized similar camps in the
past at Sipitang (2007), Teringai (2009) and Pitas (2010). Considering the high
incidence of eye diseases in the state of Sabah as compared to the rest of
the country, as informed by eye specialists, Rotary Clubs in Sabah are getting
actively involved in this project.
